It was recently revealed that the 2018 Ford Mustang GT will be the fastest GT Mustang ever.  When in Drag Strip Mode, the 2018 Mustang GT can accelerate from 0-60 in under four seconds. Instead of one major improvement, the record comes from a number of innovations.

Ford engineers attribute the wild pony’s incredible speed to a combination of increased torque, improved transmission, and custom Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires. Drag Strip mode simply optimizes the application of each of these features. But when it comes to speed and power the likeliest culprit is the engine. And Ford has delivered some pretty incredible Mustang engines over the last 50 years.

So, what’s under the hood of the new GT? Well, it’s still being powered by the 5.0L Coyote V8 engine. The Coyote delivers horsepower to the horse… try not to think about it too much.  All that matters is that the engine has been greatly improved. Now, it is slated to deliver 460 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, increases of 25 and 20, respectively. That increased sophistication and power is evident elsewhere, too.

The new 10-speed automatic SelectShift transmission, for example, is a milestone innovation and will cause some purists to defect from their stick shifters. Chief engineer Carl Widmann explains the ten-speed’s significance: “Typically, when you shift gears, you give up time. In Drag Strip mode, the engine torque doesn’t drop when you’re shifting. You get peak engine torque and horsepower straight through thanks to our new Ford-built 10-speed transmission.”

In other words more gears means less space between gears. And less space between gears means more consistent (higher) torque. Of course, the Mustang lineup includes much more than the GT.

For those not interested in breaking drag strip records, the Mustang still comes in more comfortable varieties. The new 2.3L EcoBoost is set to deliver more torque than the previous model through the inclusion of transient overboost function. Drivers will also get some fuel savings (as compared to the GT, not a Prius), making their Mustang more suitable as a daily driver. Additionally, the MagneRide damping system, previously a Shelby GT350 exclusive, has made its way into the Mustang lineup. Sensors automatically adjust all four corners to keep you in total control of the road.

There are also improvements for comfort and style. Interior themes, wrapped center consoles, and lower front hood make the 2018 Ford Mustang sleeker and more sophisticated than previous iterations. And, for the first time, Mustang owners have the option of choosing a completely digital display. The 12” LCD can be customised in terms of colour and layout to suit your preferences, making it like no Mustang dash you’ve ever seen before.

Finally, there are four exciting 19″ wheel choices for the 2018 Mustang:

  • Luster Nickel-Painted Forged Aluminum Wheel
  • Ebony Black Painted Aluminum Wheel
  • Polished Aluminum Wheel
