What’s the Best 3/4 Ton Work Truck?
PickupTrucks.com, a subsidiary of Cars.com, has named the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty XL The Best 3/4 Ton Work Truck. The award comes after the SuperDuty was named Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year. According to editors at PickupTrucks.com “to say that the new Ford Super Duty F-250 does a lot of things well is to severely understate the point.”
Earlier this year, judges took four trucks out to Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona for a series of performance challenges. Ford’s 6.2-litre V8-powered Super Duty was pitted against the RAM 2500 Tradesman, Nissan Titan XD, and Chevrolet 2500.
Built Ford Tough
But, in the end, the F-250 was the winner with 1,987 points. The second place truck, the RAM 2500, only had 1,894. Wondering what those points mean? PickupTrucks’ judges ran 13 empirical tests, awarding 100 points for each win. Ford won six of those categories outright including braking, maximum horsepower, as well as empty and loaded fuel economy. But the most important wins for the F-250 were the quarter mile and 0-60mph acceleration. In the latter category, the F-250 hit the mark in 6.49 seconds. That beat the closest competitor by an impressive 0.92 seconds. It should also be noted that F-250 was a close second in three additional categories.
Although the empirical victories were telling, Ford’s SuperDuty really distinguished itself during the judges’ subjective evaluations. Those judges concluded “the new Super Duty’s striking interior layout and quality materials, its numerous large and small storage spaces, top-notch acceleration and braking feel, more bed tie-downs and lighting features than the others, and the fact that it can carry about 66 percent of its weight. Those qualities added up to its big win”. All but one of the judges awarded the F-250 their highest points totals. One madman gave a nod to the Titan.
The Best Work Truck
In fairness, one knock against Ford’s SuperDuty was the comfort of the seats, but with its abundance of strengths, that’s unlikely to be a dealbreaker. And, after all, upgrading to the XLT trim level includes luxury seating (as well as rear-view camera, 4.2-inch touch screen, and a lockable under-seat storage box). The XLT also keeps the 6.2L V8 standard engine. But XLT package or not, the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty XL is undoubtedly at the top of heavy duty work trucks. If you have a serious job that needs to get done, the choice is obvious.
