For 2017, the Ford F-350 has received some elite upgrades. For the first time, the aluminum body and bed of the F-150 have been added to its older brother. Per Ford, the weight savings allow them to “reinvest” in steel for the frame. In turn, this makes the Super Duty stronger where it counts. When you add the optional Power Stroke turbo-diesel 6.7-liter V8, the F-350 becomes an unrivalled machine. It leads its class in torque as well as towing and payload capacity. But, surprisingly, power isn’t the F-350’s most impressive attribute.

An Agile Super Duty?

That honour goes to the F-350’s new variable-ratio steering system. After debuting in the 2016 Ford Edge, it’s making a big impact in the Super Duty lineup. The steering ratio “continually changes with vehicle speed, optimizing the steering response in all conditions.” At low speeds, fewer hand cranks will result in more turns of the front wheels. At high speeds, slight steering adjustments will seem smooth. As a result, furiously cranking the steering wheel in the parking lot is a thing of the past. In general, the handling is more natural than ever.

Indeed, it’s no small feat to make a workhorse like the Manitoba Tough F-350 handle like something much smaller. And it’s certainly a big reason why the F-350 is the 2017 Motor Trend Truck of the Year. In their words, “With its latest Super Duties, Ford has set new benchmarks for capability and functionality.” Surely, competitors will start playing catchup. But, in the meantime, the F-350 is the obvious choice for those who need their trucks to handle everything a worksite can throw at it. As a bonus, drivers will get styling updates like the distinctive two-bar grille and moulded steel bumpers.
