Test Drive Tips

Before you set foot in the dealership, take time to make a list of the top five (or 10) features you want on your new vehicle. This will help you keep your eyes on the prize when on your test drive, it’s easy to get caught up in the new car smell and lose sight of what you want.

Plan Your Route

It’s important to test the vehicle in different environments and road conditions. Go for uneven and smooth roads, highways, construction and stop and go traffic. This step is especially important if you’re travelling to a dealership in an unfamiliar town or city.

Drive Like You Normally Would

Go through all the motions you normally take when doing day-to-day driving. Change lanes, merge, accelerate, and pass. Does the car have enough power and oomph for you? Does it have too much? Also, try parallel parking. Reversing the car gives you more insight into how the car angles and rotates. Finally, slam on the brakes. Did the ABS kick in like it was supposed to? Did the car pull to one side? Better to figure it out in a parking lot on a test drive than when you’re trying to avoid a collision.

Don’t Rush

Make sure you check everything. Need suggestions? Consumer Reports has a checklist of things to look at on a test drive. It’s also not a bad idea to do more than one test drive with a vehicle, one during the day and one in the evening. Doing this gives you the chance to test how the car drives at night and allows you to check the headlights and other night-specific features. Also, make sure you give yourself enough time to go over all of the vehicle’s parts. A good test drive can take up to half an hour, so make sure you block out enough time in order to get the full picture.
